Today Dan and Jully and Don and I are planning on boarding a bus for a 5 hour ride to the Colca Canyon, very high in the Andes. We will go to Cabanaconde and plan to stay 2 nights and then 1 more night in Chivay. Altitude sickness is common at those heights, so we would really appreciate the prayers of any reading this blog in the next couple of days. Altitude sickness often does not set it for 6 - 12 hours and can be very critical. This is an often visited place, the canyon being deeper than the Grand Canyon. Don got pills to prevent altitude sickness, but they said I should not take them because there could be bad reactions with the medications that I take. So I will drink Coca tea, which is supposed to help. Neither of us has had a problem with heights in the past, but have not stayed long that high up.
Early each morning the giant condors fly over the canyon. Their wing spread is up to 10 feet. We should also see lots of lammas, alpaca, etc.
We plan to return to our hostel here in Arequipa on Friday.
